While listening to the coverage of the revolution in Egypt during the past week, I have often thought back to this marvelous piece that I heard on Planet Money–an insightful, revealing story of how global forces manifest themselves in everyday life. Interestingly, there was a recent article in the L.A. times about how the poor people who bake and buy the subsidized bread were sitting the revolution out (“At Cairo bakery, protest is a luxury; bread is not”). It seems that there were enough problems with the Egyption regime that even keeping its commitment to subsidize bread couldn’t save it. One can only imagine what kind of chaos there would be if that program had been discontinued.
